Fixing CMD Key Shortcuts in Duet Display

When using Duet Display to connect an iPad to a Mac, certain keyboard shortcuts can cause conflicts due to overlapping functionality between iPadOS and macOS. One common issue occurs when trying to use shortcuts like CMD + Tab, which on iPadOS triggers the iPad’s app switcher instead of the Mac’s app switcher. To resolve this, Duet Display includes a feature that allows you to remap the CMD key to the OPT key.

  • Start by opening the Duet Display app on your iPad and navigating to the ‘Air’ tab.
  • Establish a Mirror or Extend connection to your Mac.
  • Open the Duet Display toolbar during the iPad-to-Mac session, located at the bottom of the display.
  • Look for the “opt ⌥ <-> cmd ⌘” button in the toolbar.
  • Click on the button to enable remapping. This will swap the functions of the CMD ⌘ and OPT ⌥ keys, allowing you to use OPT ⌥ + Tab instead of CMD ⌘ + Tab to switch apps on the Mac, bypassing the conflict with iPadOS.

How It Works:

  • Normally, pressing CMD ⌘ + Tab on the iPad keyboard during a session triggers the iPad’s app switcher.
  • With the remap enabled, pressing OPT ⌥ + Tab sends the correct signal to macOS, allowing you to switch apps on your Mac instead of the iPad.

Please note that the CMD ⌘ + Tab remap is not enabled by default—you must manually activate it in the toolbar. This applies to most macOS shortcuts that use the CMD ⌘ key on your Mac.
