The Duet Display v4.x updates introduce a new architecture that is not backward compatible for Desktop-to-Desktop connections. Computers running v4.x cannot connect directly to computers running Duet Display v3.x or v2.x. This article explains the version requirements and how to solve connectivity conflicts for all desktop-to-desktop setups.
Version Compatibility
To establish a connection between two desktop computers, both devices must run a compatible version of the Duet application.
- Desktop-to-Desktop Connections: Computers running Duet Display v4.x can only connect to other computers running Duet Display v4.x. They are not backward compatible with Duet Display v3.x or v2.x.
- Desktop-to-Mobile: The Duet mobile apps (iOS and Android) remain fully compatible with all v4.x, v3.x and v2.x desktop versions.
Identifying Your Duet Display Version
To verify which version of Duet Display you are currently running:
- Open the Duet Display UI on your desktop.
- Locate the version number in the lower-left corner of the application window.
Compatibility Scenarios
- Two modern OS versions (macOS 11+ or Windows 10+)
- Update both computers to the latest Duet Display v4.x version.
- One modern OS (macOS 11+ or Windows 10+) + One legacy macOS (macOS 10.13–10.15)
- Legacy macOS versions (macOS 10.13 - macOS 10.15) are only compatible with Duet Display v2.x. To connect, you must install Duet Display v3.x on your modern computer to connect.
